Sitges in Spain

Sitges is located about 35 kilometres from Barcelona, and boasts one of the most stylish gay scenes in the whole world. For sure, the backdrop to your holiday is like no other: no horrible high rises, no grotty English pubs and some genuinely beautiful architecture dating back to the days when Sitges was at the centre of the Spanish colonial trade routes. Home to some of Spain’s most celebrated jetsetters (check out the villas on the front rented by some of the handsome, rich but sadly straight Barcelona FC footballers), here you can rub shoulders with the great and the good while, of course, also immersing yourself in a fabulous gay scene.

With a 'micro climate' summer, you can almost depend on the weather! Now there's a novelty. Like all holiday destinations in Europe, July and August are busy and the town and beach can get very crowded so do bear that in mind.

One of the main attractions of Sitges is the large number of clean sandy beaches. Along the main prmenade there are no fewer than nine breakwaters, with gently sloping golden beaches in between, most of which offer sunloungers for rent, showers and refreshment kiosks. The main gay beach in Sitges is right in the very centre of town. Platja de la Bassa Rodona in front of the Picnic Bar is very popular with women, as is Platja Balmins, the gay nudist beach, between Sant Sebastià and the port of Aiguadolç.

Unlike many other Catalan coastal resorts, Sitges has managed to retain a sense of history and charm, and the legacy of the artists who 'discovered' the town in the mid-19th Century is apparent everywhere. If you have a couple of hours to spare you could do worse than explore Sitges' architectural heritage - the parish church, the Maricel Palace, the many 'American' houses (named after their owners who made their fortunes in Cuba in the 19th Century), and the town's museums.

There are dozens of Gay bars in Sitges, most indoors with air conditioning, and they vary from mixed, gay-friendly evening venues to down-and-dirty late nighters! Most bars are mixed but there are a few which are more popular with the ladies. Marypili on Carrer Joan Tarrida is a great focal point for Spanish resident lesbians and tourists, with good music, drinks and excellent coffee. The bar is open every day from midday till 3am and it has a pavement terrace on which to relax and watch the world go by. Owners Michi (who speaks great English) and Sonia know most of what is going on here in Sitges as well as in Barcelona.

Eating out is one of the genuine pleasures of a Sitges holiday. A great choice of foods to suit all. You must try Tapas while you are in Spain and of course Paella is a local favourite wherever you are. Sitges is blessed with a large number of quality restaurants and cafés serving a variety of cuisines made from local produce. However, if you're staying in self catering accomodation, you must try shopping in the local municipal market next to the railway station.

Carnival in Sitges is a riotous affair. For one week only locals and visitors alike buff up their gold lame thongs, fluff up their feather boas and head on down to gay old Sitges for one of Spain's wildest parties. The date of Carnival varies according to the date of Easter in any given year, but in Sitges it always starts on a Thursday with the ritual bringing back to life of the Carnival King on the seafront, an event not to be missed.
