Mauritius

This Paradise is blessed with white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters and it's luxury hotels are legendary. Mauritius is surely the ultimate tropical island destination, its coral sands and turquoise waters enhanced by a cornucopia of beach resorts that know the true meaning of the word ‘luxury’. And whilst it is undoubtedly small and remote, there is absolutely nothing parochial about this island; its French, Creole and Oriental influences ensuring the very highest international standards.

Though only 40 miles long, the magnificent island offers a wealth of things to do and see, from diving and deep-sea fishing to golf and trekking holidays. Geographically it is one of Nature’s loveliest creations, with volcanic peaks, lush forests and exotic blooms unfolding to crystalline waters, coral reefs and some of the Indian Ocean’s finest beaches.

This exquisite coastline is dotted with luxury hotels and fishing villages. Its reef-sheltered lagoons are a paradise for water sports while hiking, canyoning and mountain biking beckon inland. Moreover, with year-round temperatures in the 20ºs, even the sunshine is perfectly judged.

The island’s culture is as colourful as its landscape. The wonderfully welcoming people stem from East Africa, China, India, France, England and Madagascar, creating a rich melting pot of languages, religions and traditions. Most of the inhabitants speak French, English and Creole fluently while the island’s cuisine is a delicious blend of Chinese, Indian, French and Indian Ocean influences.

Dining here is a true epicurean experience, hotel rooms are the very definition of tropical luxury, whilst service levels echo those found only in the Far East. Glamorous casinos, world-class spas and championship golf courses are also available if you want them, whilst a particularly relaxed attitude towards children ensures guests of all ages feel more than welcome.

Visitors usually tend to find all they want in the resorts themselves, although taking a catamaran trip is one of the best ways of exploring the Indian Ocean, whilst a shopping excursion into the capital, Port Louis, is the best way of experiencing the island’s multicultural background. Deep-sea fishing always features high on the agenda, with tropical gardens, bird parks, lakes, volcanoes and even crocodile farms available for those more interested in flora and fauna. Visit year round, although expect increased temperatures and rainfall between the winter months of January and April.
