CYPRUS

Cyprus, an island of
legends that basks year-round in the light of the
warm Mediterranean sun. It's 10,000 year past has
seen civilizations come and go and legends from
Alexander the Great to Cleopatra stake their claim
here. Even goddess Aphrodite made her home on
Cyprus, and travellers throughout antiquity came
here just to pay her tribute.
Today Cyprus is a modern country that effortlessly
marries European culture with ancient enchantment.
Here you will discover alluring beaches, fragrant
mountain peaks, vineyards studded with olive trees
and citrus groves, ancient ruins and old stone
villages where wine flows as freely as conversation.
This is a carefree place where a sense of
timelessness is magnified by the kindness of the
people. An island which is as exotic as any you can
imagine and more accessible than you might think.
A little bit about Paphos
Pafos, or Paphos as it
is usually written in English usually written is a
coastal town in the south-west of Cyprus. Pafos is
the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek
goddess of love, sex and beauty. Even the town's
name is linked to the Goddess, as Paphos was the
name of the mythological daughter of Aphrodite and
Pygmalion. In Greco-Roman times it was the island's
capital, and it is famous for the remains of the
Roman Governor's palace where extensive, fine
mosaics are a major tourist attraction. The Apostle
Paul visited the town during the 1st century. The
town of Paphos is included in the official UNESCO
list of cultural and natural treasures of the
world's heritage.
Life here focuses around an attractive little
harbour with picturesque open air fish restaurants
which line a quayside with an abundance of bright
fishing boats and pleasure craft. With a population
of just 28.000 Paphos nestles at the foot the
Western Troodos Mountains, which add another
dimension to this area of scenic beauty. The recent
addition of its own international airport nearby has
opened up the Paphos area, and the resort is graced
with some luxury hotels along the coastline. Here
you will find an air of holiday charm combined with
history, and olden-day elegance is lent to the town
by its classical style buildings in the upper part
of town which leads to the shopping area. There are
superb museums and galleries here as well as
important archaeological sites.
Although homosexuality is no longer illegal in
Cyprus, the scene here is not 'promoted' to the
extent of other countries and those searching for a
full on party experience would be well advised to
seek this somewhere else. This is a quiet and
enchanting island and most suited to those who want
to get away from it all and soak up the cultural
importance of a land steeped in history. There is a
nightlife of course and countless bars and
restaurants to enjoy so you won't be spoiled for
choice when it comes to a night out. There are
wonderful beaches dotted around the coastline, many
with caves to explore and some even allow nude
bathing.
